Five Things: Sen. Shaheen in Salem Today

Also, New York lawmakers have approved the toughest gun law in the nation.

1. TODAY'S FORECAST: Rain, snow and a high of 38 will make for a tough commute today. Clouds in the evening will clear up with a low of 30.

2. SHAHEEN IN SALEM: U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) will visit Woodbury School to meet with the eighth grade class and congratulate teacher Michele Brustolon for her selection to speak at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History today at 11 a.m.

Brustolon, who teaches Earth Science and Reading, was one of just three teachers from across the country invited to speak about oceanic science at an event in December, 2013. During her visit, Shaheen will also speak to students about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

3. TOUGH ON GUNS: New York has passed the toughest gun control laws in the nation. The passage is the first since the Newtown, CT massacre. Learn more about the strict regulations here.

4. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors for beverage purposes," is ratified on this day in 1919 and becomes the law of the land.

5. SHS ATHLETICS UPDATE: In action yesterday were both the Salem High Boys and Girls basketball teams. The boys lost 61-49 at Nashua South while the girls won at home against Nashua South 77-64. Boys hockey will be in action tonight against Nashua South and Boys wrestling will match up with Londonderry.
