Woman, 44, Killed by Teenage Driver on Main Street

Identities are not being released at this time.

A 44-year-old woman was hit and killed last night by a 19-year-old driver on Main Street, just west of the intersection of Hampstead Road, according to Salem Police.

The woman, who is not being identified at this time, was struck by a 2002 Dodge Ram pick-up truck.

According to police, officers responded to the area at 12:04 a.m. where they found the woman lying on the side of the road.

Police said she sustained life-threatening injuries and was unconscious at the scene.

The woman was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where she was evaluated and was subsequently transported by helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with serious internal injuries.

She later succumbed to her injuries at Brigham and Women's.

The driver, also not being identified, stopped at the scene to assist in providing medical aid to the victim until the arrival of emergency medical personnel.

The Salem Police Department Technical Accident Reconstruction Team (TAR) was called to the scene and will be leading the investigation.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages, but police said that it doesn't appear that speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the cause.
