Local Salon Cuts Hair for Clean Water, Raises Hundreds

The spa participated in a global attempt to break a world record.

A local hair salon raised hundred of dollars in a matter of hours this week as part of a global world record attempt by Aveda to raise money through haircuts for the Clean Water Fund.

Soleil Salon & Spa in Windham became an Aveda concept salon in January. With the association comes the chance to take part in charitable efforts, including Monday's "Global Cut-a-Thon." The event took place at Aveda salons across the world, from Tokyo to Paris to New Hampshire. The world record goal was to raise the most money through haircuts in a 24-hour span.

"We're very excited to actually be part of the big family (of Aveda) and give back to the community as well," said Soleil Salon & Spa owner Luisa Garcia.

Soleil reached a final total of 32 haircuts and $595 for the event, starting at 11 a.m. and running until 6 p.m.

Garcia was also visited later in the day by Laurie Saad, a representative from Aveda, and another representative from the Clean Water Fund.

The event coincided with Earth Day, which is celebrated annually on April 22 in more than 192 countries. It was part of an international effort by the Aveda network to raise $5 million for clean water in April 2013.

Garcia said she is already excited to take part in more fundraising next year.
