Over $1 Million in School Roof Work to be Discussed

Both Windham Center School and Windham Middle School are in dire need of roof work, according to SAU 28 Business Administrator Adam Steel.

The Windham School Board will discuss a detailed plan this week to provide over $1 million in roof repairs and replacements to two schools in the district.

According to a memorandum addressed to Interim Superintendent Dr. Henry LaBranche on May 13, SAU 28 Business Administrator Adam Steel recently outlined the current needs for both Windham Center School and Windham Middle School.

Steel said that between FY14 and FY20, roof repairs and replacements will see an estimated cost of $1,053,184.

Those needs were outlined in a detailed chart indicating the condition of 11 separate roofs at WCS and five others at WMS.

The chart shows a plan to phase the roof repairs and replacements, starting with four repairs at WCS in FY14 for a total cost of $26,842.

Additionally, two roof replacements at Windham Center School will see an estimated cost of $161,207 in FY14.

The total cost of repairs needed in the first year of the phased plan will be $206,854, factoring in a $18,805 contingency.

According to Steel, there is $168,000 available in a capital reserve fund for roof repairs, established through an article on the FY12 warrant.

Steel further explained that the $168,000 came loosely from a roof issue report drafted in August 2010.

Steel wrote that in the last two years, $15,000 has been spent each year to address roof problems, but those patches and repairs have become more invasive each year.

Further repairs and replacements on the chart include $432,837 allocated for FY15, $105,214 for FY16, $82,500 for FY18 and $225,779 for FY19.

An additonal cost for two roof replacements in FY30 is also included on the chart for a total of $171,626.

The School Board will meet at the Community Development Department on May 21 at 7 p.m.
