WFD to Wear Pink Shirts for Breast Cancer

The shirts will be worn for two weeks this month.

The Windham Fire Department announced this week that local firefighters and staff will again wear pink t-shirts for two weeks this year in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The officials will swap out their traditional navy blue shirts for the pink ones. The pink shirts will be used from Oct. 8 through Oct. 19.

"This is a a great opportunity for our department to bring awareness to our community, show support to those close to us and to provide financial support to local organizations who are involved in this fight," said Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson.

On the back the shirt will read "supporting the firefighters, admiring the survivors, honoring the taken and never, ever giving up hope."

The idea for the pink shirts, according to McPherson, came from the International Association of Firefighters, which has asked all local affiliates to participate.

Pink shirts will be sold to the public on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of WFD's annual Fire Prevention Open House. All contributions will go toward breast cancer awareness.
