Just under 1 million early voters in New Jersey have either cast their ballot in person or by mail ahead of the heated gubernatorial election on Tuesday, according to recent polls.

As of Sunday afternoon, 614,757 Democrats have voted early, followed by 347,891 Republicans, according to Political Polls, a non-partisan group.

Political analyst Michah Rasmussen, who serves as Director of the Rebovich Institute for NJ Politics at Rider University, also cited data from umichvoter showing the breakdown of early voting across the 21 New Jersey counties in 2025 compared to 2024.

"If you want a measure of the difference in enthusiasm across the state, look at a party-by-party comparison of in-person, early voting in each county, a voting method embraced by both parties.," said Rasmussen.

Rasmussen also said the numbers show Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill has a clear advantage over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli at this point, according to CBS.

"I don't think we can or should say that Ciattarelli is out of it. Very much to the sense that this is a competitive race," he said, according to CBS.

Early voting opened in New Jersey on Oct. 25 and ended on Sunday. Votes cast during early voting are considered complete, and there will not be an opportunity to amend them.

Monday is the deadline for In-Person Mail-In Ballot Applications for the General Election by 3 p.m. Vote-by-mail ballots sent through the mail must be postmarked by Election Day, and received by the county Board of Elections on or before the sixth day after the close of the polls.

General Election Day is Tuesday. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Rallies

On Saturday, former president Barack Obama made a visit to New Jersey to support Sherrill’s campaign for governor as he attended a “get out the vote” rally in Newark.

Obama endorsed Sherrill for governor earlier in October. He also endorsed Gov. Phil Murphy during his re-election campaign in 2021.

A counter-demonstration was also held in support of Republican candidate Ciattarelli at Phillips Park in Newark.

Ciattarelli received an endorsement from President Donald Trump in May, helping the former state assemblyman to rack up a landslide victory in the party’s primary election.

Trump fired off another round of support for Ciattarelli earlier this month, posting that the Republican is a “winner for New Jersey.” The president joined Ciattarelli for a tele-rally with fellow GOP boosters on Friday as the state kicked off early voting.

Polls

Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot currently serving as a congress member, is running for governor as a Democrat in New Jersey. She is facing a challenge from Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman who has gotten an endorsement from President Donald Trump.

A recent poll by Quinnipiac University New Jersey poll released on Oct. 30 showed Sherrill is leading Ciattarelli 51 percent over 43 percent.

Breaking down the results of Thursday's poll shows Democrats favoring Sherrill with 94 percent versus 1 percent for Cittarelli. At the same time, Republicans favored Cittarelli with 93 percent over 4 percent for Sherrill.
