Freezing Rain, Snow For Parts Of NJ Before Warmup: New Forecast

Highs in the 60s are expected in NJ, but not before freezing rain and possible snow fall on parts of the state this week. Here's the latest:

NEW JERSEY - A new storm system is slated to hit New Jersey, bringing with it freezing rain and possible snow for parts of the state before temperatures approach 60 degrees later this week.

The Garden State has already started to thaw Monday, according to the National Weather Service, with temperatures in the mid-30s expected after a weekend of overnight temperatures in the teens.

“After a very cold start in some areas, many of us will rise above freezing,” the National Weather Service Mount Holly Station said in a statement Monday. "Sunshine will mix with clouds later on; not as cold tonight with more cloud cover."

But the sun won’t be out for long, forecasters said, as multiple rounds of rain are set to hit the state starting Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

A chance of snow and freezing rain is also possible in North Jersey and the Poconos Tuesday night into Wednesday as low temperatures dip below freezing, per the National Weather Service, though the storm could still bring icy conditions to areas further south and east depending on how the system evolves.

“All indications are that any precip will be light,” the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion Monday. No flooding watches or advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service as of Monday morning, which lines up with Weather Underground’s forecast of less than an inch of rainfall accumulation per day from Wednesday to Friday.

AccuWeather meteorologists note the greatest concern for the week will be for travelers in the Northeast, with any moisture from fog or rain capable of causing sheets of clear ice to develop.

“The icy mixture can result in slippery roads and sidewalks, travel disruptions and power outages across the region,” AccuWeather meteorologists wrote.

Garden State residents can expect warmer temperatures in the 40s and 50s, respectively, on Wednesday and Thursday, alongside more rain. The precipitation should taper off by Friday morning, forecasters said, just in time for high temperatures approaching 60 degrees.
