How Much Do NJ Teachers Earn? See What Your District Pays

See what teachers earn in the 10 top-paying districts, and where the salaries are lowest. Search the chart to see what your district pays.

Across New Jersey teachers are setting up their classrooms and preparing their gradebooks for the new school year, with new students and new challenges.

How much do they get paid for the task of teaching students? Here is a look at the average salaries by school district from data in the Taxpayers' Guide to Education Spending that is produced yearly by the state Department of Education. The averages are from the 2023-24 school year, the most recent data available.

The state average salary for all districts at all levels is $80,023. The average is higher in districts that serve only high school students, at $89,132, and lower in CSSD (county special services districts) that serve students with special needs.

The districts' average salaries are affected by the teachers' number of years of experience but they also reflect differences in the state's regions.

In 10 districts, the average reaches more than $100,000, with nine of the 10 highest in North Jersey counties. Teachers in the Northern Valley Regional District have the highest average salary, earning $117,410.

The 10 lowest average salaries are all at charter schools, all in different counties, with Ridge and Valley Charter School in Warren County paying $49,181 as an average. Excluding charter schools, most of the districts with the lowest average salaries for teachers are in southern New Jersey counties, the exception being East Newark Boro School, a kindergarten-through-8th school where the average salary is $53,411.

There are eight schools/districts not included in the chart because average salary information was not available: Salem County Vocational; Brilla New Jersey Charter School; Stow Creek Township Schools; Greater Brunswick Charter School; People's Achieve Community Charter School; Prospect Park Boro School; Union County Teams Charter School, and Kindle Education Public Charter.
