A new poll shows that New Jersey’s 2025 gubernatorial race is getting tighter as Election Day approaches.

Emerson College’s most recent poll gives Democrat Mikie Sherrill a slight lead ahead of Republican Jack Ciattarelli, but only by one percent. This is a slight increase from an Emerson poll last month that found the candidates were each tied at 43 percent support, with 11 percent of voters undecided.

The new poll finds that 49 percent of likely voters support Sherrill, and 48 percent of voters support Republican opponent Ciattarelli. Two percent of likely voters polled remain undecided.

When the two percent of undecided voters is accounted for, however, support for Sherrill jumps to 50 percent, while Ciattarelli remains supported by 48 percent of voters, the poll indicates.

“Heading into Election Day, the gender divide in the gubernatorial election has solidified: men break for Ciattarelli by 16 points, while women break for Sherrill by 18 points,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said. “Since last month, Ciattarelli’s lead among men increased by four points, and Sherill’s lead among women grew by eight points.”

The poll also indicates that both candidates have split favorable ratings among likely voters. Emerson says 47 percent of likely voters have a favorable view of Sherrill, while 47 percent have an unfavorable view of her. Ciattarelli’s favorable ratings are also split, with 48 percent having a favorable view of him, while 48 percent have an unfavorable view.

According to the poll, 34 percent of likely voters approve of incumbent Democrat Phil Murphy, and 97 percent of his supporters plan to vote for Sherrill. Conversely, 80 percent of likely voters disapprove of Murphy, of whom 91 percent will vote for Ciattarelli.

Those who are neutral about Murphy tend to lean towards Sherrill, 79 percent to 12 percent, Emerson added.
