Here's What Schools Had The Best SAT Scores Amid Declining NJ Averages

NEW JERSEY — Newly-released data from the state shows that the average SAT score fell for the third year in a row in New Jersey, as students began taking the test online for the first time.

Once essential for college applications, scores from standardized tests like the SAT and rival ACT carry less weight today as colleges and universities pay more attention to the sum of student achievements and activities throughout high school. Still, close to 63 percent of high school seniors took the SAT in 2023/2024 or in previous years, a slight increase from the year before, according to the latest School Performance Reports released by the New Jersey Department of Education.

During the 2023/2024 school year, the average math score for the SAT in New Jersey was 519; the average reading/writing score was 530, with an average combined score of roughly 1,049 (a decrease from last year's average of 1,058). A perfect score on the test would be a combined 1600, or 800 in each section.

In general, students at magnet schools and specialized public high schools received the highest overall scores — Students at Edison Academy Magnet School in Middlesex County had an average SAT score of 1,530.
