NJ Weather: Severe Thunderstorms Possible As Storm Risk Rises Tuesday

Update: Parts of the state are now under a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Here's the latest.

NEW JERSEY — Parts of the Garden State are now under an increased risk for severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, forecasters said.

The northeast portion of the state is slated to see the strongest effects of the storm, including damaging wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service. That region has been upgraded to a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms, the agency said in an update about 1 p.m.

Rainfall is slated to begin Tuesday afternoon as cooler temperatures are forecast in the low- to mid-60s in North and Central Jersey, the weather service said. South Jersey near Philadelphia to Vineland is expected to see temperatures in the 80s.

“With a backdoor front remaining nearly stationary over our region, quite an impressive gradient could be seen,” the weather service said of the varying forecast.

"Incidents of damaging wind gusts, hail and torrential downpours” are also possible Tuesday, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz said in a forecast discussion.
