📰 News we're reading

• CAPS Charter Schools Violated Public Contract Laws, Committed Nepotism, State Of NJ Says (patch.com) — Asbury Park residents are learning more about serious allegations against College Achieve Public Schools’ Asbury Park campus, after a state comptroller report cited contracting violations and nepotism tied to its former local director. The report, ongoing subpoenas, and multiple lawsuits come as Asbury Park’s own school district accuses the charter of improperly enrolling out-of-town students and diverting more than a million dollars in local education funds. The findings raise sharp questions about oversight, spending of $57 million in public money, and the long-term impact on Asbury Park’s public schools.

• $1 Million In Upgrades For Asbury Park Wastewater Treatment Plant (patch.com) — Asbury Park is set to receive a $1 million federal boost to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment plant with a new screening system that helps prevent breakdowns and ocean discharges. Local leaders say the project will protect beaches, support summer tourism, and improve public health without shifting extra costs onto city taxpayers. The funding, secured by Rep. Frank Pallone, underscores ongoing investment in Asbury Park’s critical infrastructure.

• No Golden Globe but 'Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere' wins AARP (app.com) — A new Bruce Springsteen biopic set partly in Asbury Park just picked up AARP’s Movies for Grownups award for best period film, highlighting the Boss’s Jersey roots. The movie focuses on the making of his 1982 album “Nebraska” and his relationship with his Freehold father, while a separate concert film shot in Red Bank is now streaming.
