Portuguese Man O'Wars Are Still Lurking On Jersey Shore Beaches
Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol offers advice on what to do if you've been stung.
Here's a little factoid almost guaranteed to make you cringe.
The tentacles of a Portuguese Man O'War are closer to you than you know.
"Tentacles can actually reach 165 feet, but are more likely around 30 feet and easily get torn off in shore break before reaching the beach. These super long tentacles give them a wider area trap prey," according to the Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol Facebook page.

So keep kids, pets and yourselves away from the beach if you spot them. The creatures have been washing up on beaches throughout New Jersey this October.
"We're glad they at least waited until the summer ended," the post states.

If you do get stung, wash the affected area with salt water, then remove any lingering tentacles with gloves. Seek medical attention if needed.
"People exposed to man-of-wars can always call the New Jersey poison center at 800-222-1222 for more information," the post states.
