2 Charged, 1 Still At Large After Resident Chases Burglars Away In Basking Ridge: Police

A homeowner heard and saw the three men on the in-house cameras before chasing them away in December 2024, said police.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A year-long investigation led to the arrest of a man who was chased out of a home by the homeowner in an attempted car burglary, said authorities.

On Dec. 2, the Bernards Township Police announced that Detective Kendall Kulik received approval from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office to charge Nafe Sharif of Newark with second-degree burglary for a home burglary in December 2024 on Meeker Road.

On Dec. 9, 2024, at 2:50 a.m., three men broke into the garage of a home on Meeker Road to steal a motor vehicle parked in the driveway, said Sergeant Steven Matthews.

"The family was home at the time, and the homeowner chased them off after hearing them and observing them on in-home cameras," said Matthews.

The men were unable to take anything from the home.

Nasir Lewter of East Orange was identified and charged in July. The third man and driver of the getaway vehicle has not been identified yet.
