Bernards Township, County Propose Sharing Road Salt Dome

Somerset County and Bernards Township have proposed a shared road salt dome in the township.

With the seemingly never-ending conveyor belt of snow storms that hit Bernards Township this past winter, the need for road salt was apparent.

Bernards Township and Somerset County has proposed a shared salt dome behind the township engineering building, located at 277 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge, according to a report from TAPinto.net. The salt from the shared salt dome would be used to help clear both county and local roads, the report said.

During the past two winters, Bernards Township actually ran out of snow, the report said.

If the shared proposal is approved, Somerset County would shoulder the cost of construction of the dome in Bernards Township, according to the report. The township has been storing its salt in two old sheds, which would be torn down to make room for the new dome, if approved.
