BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The Bernards Township Health Department received approval as a COVID-19 vaccination site. But like New Jersey and the rest of the county, they're not immune to the vaccine shortage.

The local health department got approval Jan. 27 to open a small vaccine site. But the state informed the agency Friday that they must wait to begin because of the overall shortage of doses, said Bernards Township Health Officer Lucy Forgione.

So even though the Bernards Township Health Department received approval, they can't place orders for vaccines yet, Forgione told Patch. It's not immediately clear when the health department may be able to order vaccines and set up appointments.

"While we are disappointed, as soon as we can order vaccines and schedule appointments, residents will be able to sign up," Forgione said.

At this moment, the local health department asks that people not reach the office by phone, since they're overwhelmed with phone calls.

Vaccine shortages have hampered inoculation efforts throughout the nation and New Jersey. The Garden State's six "megasites" haven't been able to administer as many doses as they're set up for. The Morristown regional megasite even closed for last weekend because of the shortage.

The Bernards Township Health Department is still preparing for when they can offer vaccines. The agency is seeking medical and non-medical volunteers 18 and older.
