Democrats To Take Control Of Bernards Township Committee At Reorganization Meeting

The new Township Committee will also be selecting a new mayor and deputy mayor to serve in 2026.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — For the first time in almost 90 years, Democrats will be taking charge of the Bernards Township Committee.

During the reorganization meeting on Tuesday, Brett Hodges and John Tompkins will be sworn into office.

In the November election, Hodges, with 5,808 votes, won over David Tancredi with 5,529 votes for the full-term seat. Tompkins, with 5,895 votes, won over Bill McMahon with 5,439 votes for the unexpired term seat.

"Both John and Brett are first-time candidates, and through their combined relentless efforts, have flipped the majority for the first time in almost 90 years. The last time Democrats held a majority on the Township Committee was in 1938," according to the Bernards Township Democratic Committee.

Additionally, at the meeting, the committee members will vote and select a new Mayor and a Deputy Mayor. The new Mayor will then make appointments to Township Committees.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 1 Collyer Ln., Basking Ridge.
