E-Bike, Scooter Safety Tips Offered By Bernards Township Police
As more electric bikes are seen on Township roads, Bernards Township police officers remind residents of the laws surrounding them.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Law enforcement officials are reminding residents of the dangers and laws regarding electric bikes, or e-bikes, which have gained popularity in recent years.
"STAY SAFE! And for the Drivers out there…LOOK TWICE-SAVE A LIFE!" said Bernards Township Police Department.

- If your child's E-bike can go faster than 20mph (but less than 28mph) it is considered a motorized bicycle (aka moped) and you must be 15 years old, have a moped license, registration, insurance and DOT approved helmet
- If it goes faster than 28mph it’s considered a motorcycle and you must be 17, have a motorcycle license or endorsement, registration, insurance and DOT approved helmet.
- DON’T BE FOOLED!!! Many E-bikes sold with a sticker showing max speed of 20mph can be very easily modified to go much faster. Sometimes just through the use of an app or an option on the screen, but often by following a YouTube video.
- When riding a “street legal” E-bike, all regular bicycle laws, rules of the road, and safety guidelines apply
On Sept. 24, a 13-year-old boy who was riding an e-bike in Scotch Plains was hit and killed by a landscaping truck.
On the same day, a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured and hospitalized after being hit by car while riding an electric scooter in Parsippany.
