Heavy Smoke At Ridge High School Sparked By HVAC Unit

The fire alarm was activated early Monday morning.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Heavy smoke was reported at Ridge High School on Monday morning prompting firefighters to respond.

At 12:40 a.m., the Basking Ridge Fire Co. No 1 & EMS was dispatched to Ridge High School at 268 S Finley Road for the activation of a fire alarm.

Bernards Township Police and firefighters found heavy smoke inside, said the fire department.

The Lyons VA Fire Department also came as a precaution due to a potential fire in the building.

"To the best of my knowledge, an HVAC motor at RHS overheated, caused a lot of smoke, and tripped the fire alarm," said School Superintendent Nick Markarian.

Firefighters shut the power to the motor and ensured that nothing was actually on fire, said Markarian.

"There was, however, a lot of smoke and an awful smell that we were able to clear out in the wee hours of the AM and avoid any school opening delays," said Markarian.

"No flames, no damage, and no surprise day off for the students!" said the fire department.

Markarian thanked the fire, police and School District Safety and Security Officer Hank Werner for responding in the middle of the night.
