BELLEVILLE, NJ — Students at an elementary school in Belleville were relocated to the high school on Friday due to a “situation” inside the building, district administrators say.

The temporary relocation is a precautionary measure, according to a letter sent to local parents and guardians.

“Please be assured that everyone is safe and that this step was taken strictly out of caution,” administrators said.

The exact nature of the “situation” that led to the move was not provided in the letter.

Students from School 5 will follow a single session schedule on Friday and will be dismissed at 12:50 p.m. from Belleville High School. Parents and guardians are asked to pick up their children at the auditorium doors (Door 2).

UPDATE: FIRE EXTINGUISHER DROPPED

In a follow-up message to the school community, Superintendent Erick Alfonso reported that the incident happened when a staff member accidentally bumped into a fire extinguisher, causing it to fall and discharge.

"At the time, the hallway was empty, and no students or staff were in the immediate area," Alfonso added.
