Belleville Opens New Township Parking Lot On Busy Street

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Belleville now has its first municipal parking lot along Washington Avenue in decades.

Town officials recently cut the ribbon on a 28-space parking lot at 211 Washington Avenue, a space previously occupied by a veterinarian’s office. It has two accessible spaces, and will eventually feature two electric vehicle charging stations.

The lot is metered and managed through the ParkMobile app.

Belleville Mayor Michael Melham called the lot a “strategic investment” for the township, and claimed it will pay for itself over time via metered parking fees and leased spaces.

“This project not only replaces what had been a deteriorating building, but more parking accessibility will no doubt have a great effect on the downtown shops, restaurants and businesses,” Melham said.

It will also be a boost for visitors to the nearby Belleville Public Library, he added.

The township is also in the process of creating another public parking lot on space it recently acquired in the Silver Lake section, Melham said – one which will also serve as a police substation.

Meanwhile, other plans for Washington Avenue include breaking ground on a new “pocket park,” the mayor reported.
