Belleville Sisters Add To Their 5-Year Campaign Of Kindness With School Supply Drive

Selena and Sabrina Kossup of Belleville have been carrying out a community service project that they've dubbed the "Wave of Positivity."

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A wave of positivity continues to spread in Belleville.

Selena and Sabrina Kossup, two sisters from Belleville, have been carrying out a campaign of kindness over the past five years that they’ve dubbed the “Wave of Positivity.” Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the siblings have spearheaded several events in the township – each aimed at making their community a better place to live.

Selena, who graduated from Seton Hall University in May, and her younger sister, Sabrina – currently a student at Paramus Catholic High School – have made community service a way of life. Their initiatives have included selling lawn signs to raise funds for the Belleville police and fire department, organizing food drives for St. Peter’s Church-Little Zion, delivering plush toys to the children at Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey in Belleville, and distributing U.S. flags with the help of American Legion Post 105.

The siblings continue to launch new initiatives each year – and bring back old ones with a new twist.

Recently, the Kossup sisters decided to hold a school supply giveaway, something they’ve done in the past. With money they saved throughout the year, they purchased and assembled more than 100 thoughtfully curated back-to-school kits. Each was packed with essentials such as pencils, crayons, notebooks, markers and glue.

Instead of hosting a traditional distribution event this year, the sisters decided to partner with local organizations to reach even more children. They hand-delivered supplies to Mercy House, Little Zion U.A.M.E. Church in Belleville, and to The Brunch Box, a local business that has supported the sisters and their initiatives. The Brunch Box will distribute the supplies among their Belleville-sponsored youth team and local families – ensuring the Wave of Positivity continues to spread.

This year, the sisters got some help from two of Sabrina’s classmates, Hampton and Hunter Taylor, who assembled packets and volunteered their time before classes resumed.

“Taking the time to make a difference in people’s lives makes my heart happy,” Sabrina Kossup said, emphasizing how rewarding it is to serve others and continue leading by example.

“Our hearts are full when we see the smiles of the children and the appreciation of families,” Selena Kossup agreed. “It reminds us why we do what we do.”
