Car Fatally Strikes Pedestrian In Belleville, Driver Leaves Scene And Returns: ECPO

The driver continued for a short distance before returning to the scene. He told police that he thought he'd hit a deer, authorities said.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A pedestrian died after a car hit her in Belleville early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal car-pedestrian strike took place around 12:30 a.m. on Franklin Avenue near the intersection with Belleville Avenue.

The driver – a 19-year-old male – was reportedly travelling southbound on Franklin Avenue when he struck the pedestrian, later identified as Eliana N. Ambrosino, 26, of Belleville.

The driver continued for a short distance before returning to the scene. He told Belleville police officers that he thought he’d hit a deer, authorities said.

Ambrosino was transported to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville and later pronounced deceased.

An investigation is ongoing, prosecutors said. No additional information was immediately available.
