BELLEVILLE, NJ — Dozens of handicap parking spaces were recently removed in Belleville after a town-wide review, officials say.

Earlier this year, Belleville officials reported that they were temporarily pausing the issuance of new handicap parking permits so the town can check for potential “abuse” of the system. Police Chief Mark Minichini said anyone with a handicap parking permit was being asked to resubmit as part of the audit.

Township Manager Brian Banda gave an update about the situation at the town council meeting on Sept. 23.

According to Banda, the police department completed their review of the handicapped parking throughout town. The review resulted in 34 spaces being removed that were no longer in use.

Police have also reopened the handicap parking application program with new rules and fees in place, which officials hope will reduce the abuse of the program – and help free up more parking on the streets for residents, Banda said.
