Gov. Phil Murphy has issued another batch of pardons and commutations for prison inmates and court-involved New Jersey residents – beefing up a total that now numbers in the hundreds.

On Tuesday, Murphy announced his sixth round of clemency actions, granting 19 commutations and 36 pardons.

The recipients had been charged with crimes that ranged from lesser offenses such as drug possession and probation violations, to more serious charges such as aggravated assault and murder (see the full list below).

“Each grant of clemency represents a renewed opportunity for someone who has demonstrated accountability, growth, and a sincere commitment to rebuilding their life,” Murphy said.

“As we approach the holiday season, I am grateful to play a small part in reuniting families and providing a second chance to each of these individuals,” the governor added.

Antoine Nelson, one of the 36 people who received a pardon, spoke about his experiences post-incarceration, including the work he has done in violence prevention and youth development.

According to the governor’s office, Nelson was convicted of multiple drug and weapon charges from 1997 to 2007. He has maintained a clean record since 2010.

Nelson founded a nonprofit, Sons of Someone, in 2014, and has mentored hundreds of young men across New Jersey and Philadelphia since then, facilitating social-emotional learning programs, providing reentry guidance, and mentoring high-risk youth through weekly one-on-one sessions.

“During my time in prison as a young man, I realized that if I ever got a second chance, I would spend my life building what I once helped destroy,” Nelson said.

“This pardon will not change who I am – rather, it will expand on and continue the work that I am doing in my community,” he added.

The Murphy administration has now given out 283 grants of clemency since the governor signed Executive Order No. 362 in June 2024, which created the state’s first-ever Clemency Advisory Board.

The wave of pardons from the governor’s office have taken place as crime continues to drop in New Jersey.

The state saw 20,684 violent crimes with a population of 9,500,851 residents in 2024 – a rate of 217.7 per 100,000 people. That’s down from 225.3 per 100,000 people in 2023. The Garden State’s violent crime totals were well below the national rate, which came to 359.1 per 100,000 people.

The state has also seen a long-term drop in violent crime over the past decades – especially from levels seen in the 1980s and 1990s, FBI data shows.
