Nutley Teen’s Music Theater Prowess Is Source Of Pride For Town
Alexis Hamlin was the first student at Nutley High School to receive the New Jersey Governor's Award in Arts Education.

NUTLEY, NJ — A teen from Nutley recently earned a proclamation from the township for being the first student at Nutley High School to receive the New Jersey Governor's Award in Arts Education.
Alexis Hamlin got a round of applause at a recent Nutley Board of Commissioners meeting for her achievement.
Since 1980, the award has celebrated the remarkable artistic accomplishments of young individuals, honoring their dedication, talent, and excellence in the arts. The award is the highest honor a high school student can achieve in their field, showcasing Hamlin’s “extraordinary commitment, exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of excellence,” township officials said.

It’s also a point of pride for the school and Nutley community, officials added.
“I am so proud this evening to offer this proclamation on behalf of the Board of Commissioners because we have a young lady who started with us as a very young child, and who has succeeded and has not only made herself and her family proud – but our entire township as well,” said Commissioner Mauro Tucci, who sponsored the proclamation.

Nutley town officials provided some additional background about Hamlin and her achievements:
“Alexis began her musical theatre journey many years ago within Nutley’s Parks and Recreation Department, which laid the groundwork for her passion and achievements in the arts. She has dedicated countless hours to perfecting her craft, showcasing passion, perseverance, and artistic brilliance that shine both on stage and off. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Alexis excels academically, being recognized as an honor student at Nutley High School. She serves as Troupe President of the International Thespian Society and is an active member of both the Spanish Honors Society and the Tri-M Honors Society. Her accolades include the National Choral Award and being named Section Leader of the Year, further emphasizing her leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Hamlin said the proclamation is an “incredible recognition.”
“My journey in music school theater began at Nutley Parks and Recreation,” she said, crediting the programs for “shaping my life and allowing me to discover my passion.”
“As I continue my musical theater journey in college and beyond, I carry all of these incredible experiences, lessons and memories with me,” Hamlin said. “Thank you again for this wonderful honor.”
