Nutley Wants You For Its Flash Mob

Town asks residents to join in choreographed July dance event to support

Nutley residents, get on your dancing shoes. You're invited to take part in the ultimate flash mob.

Mayor Alphonse Petracco and the H.O.P.E. for Nutley committee recently unveiled an ambitious and internet-savvy community outreach project: Nutley’s Ultimate Flash Mob.

Nutley residents, young and old alike, are encouraged to learn the choreographed dance over the next several weeks for a chance to be filmed as part of a final product that will be presented at the Township of Nutley’s Fourth of July Civic Celebration.

With the support of local organizations, including the Nutley Board of Education, local schools and groups will be learning and performing the dance during either a scheduled ‘dance event’, or will be prepared to participate in a spontaneous ‘flash mob’ event. All events will be filmed by either the Nutley High School Broadcast Classes or a member of the H.O.P.E. Committee.

Residents can tune in to Cablevision Channel 77 or Fios Channel 42 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily to learn the dance. Organizers said that the dance, choreographed by Lori Michaels, Courtney Lynch and Ashley Franto of The Reach Out & Viibe Project, is easy to learn and can be broken down into simple movements so that pre-schoolers to our seniors can learn and participate.

The featured song is called What I Am, from recording artist Will.i.am, chosen for its positive lyrics.

“The Ultimate Flash Mob is a wonderful way to bring our community together,” commented Mayor Alphonse Petracco. “It’s important to remember what H.O.P.E’s mission is and, ultimately that the song chosen for this initiative embodies everything that H.O.P.E. stands for,” the Mayor said.

Filmed events will have a chance to make it into the final “Nutley’s Ultimate Flash Mob” film feature which will be shown on July 4th. All flash mob participants will have preferred seating in the Oval for the viewing. If you or your organization have not been contacted by the H.O.P.E. Committee, but would like to participate, please contact Dana Melillo at 973-284-4940, Ext. 2164 or Loren McCreesh at 973-284-4900, Ext. 2255, or e-mail hopefornutleyflashmob@gmail.com.
