NJ-34 Primary Election Results: Morales, Venezia Win, AP Says (UPDATED)

NEW JERSEY — A statehouse race in New Jersey’s 34th District reached it first major fork in the road on Tuesday when voters went to the polls for the 2025 primary election.

The 34th District includes the municipalities of Belleville, Bloomfield, East Orange, Glen Ridge, Nutley and Orange.

Two Democrats are up for re-election: Carmen Morales and Michael Venezia. Meanwhile, two challengers are trying to wrestle the Democratic nomination away from the incumbents: Frank Velez and Brittany Claybrooks.

The Republican candidates – Demetrius Eley and Lorenzo Marchese Jr. – each ran unopposed.

The winners of the primary will advance to the general election on Nov. 4, which will also include any third-party or independent candidates.

The Associated Press has called the Democratic race in favor of Carmen Morales and Michael Venezia. Here are the uncertified results, according to the AP (via NJ Spotlight News):

DEMOCRATS (vote for two, 86% of votes counted)

  • Brittany Claybrooks – 8,768 votes (24.1%)
  • Carmen Morales – 12,285 votes (33.8%)
  • Frank Velez – 5,599 votes (15.4%)
  • Michael Venezia – 9,717 votes (26.7%)
