Unlicensed Driver Hits Pedestrian With Truck In Belleville: Police
A 16-foot box truck hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk, causing her serious injuries, Belleville police said.
BELLEVILLE, NJ — An unlicensed driver in a 16-foot box truck hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk in Belleville on Monday, causing her serious injuries, authorities said.
The Belleville Police Department said the crash took place around 3:14 p.m. near the intersection of Union Avenue and Mill Street.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver – Luis Alberto Talavera Lira of Elizabeth – was traveling south on Union Avenue in a 2014 Ford E35 when he hit a 78-year-old woman as she was attempting to cross the street.

The driver remained at the scene, authorities said.
The injured pedestrian was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she was listed in critical condition, Belleville police said.

Lira has been charged with 2c:40-22b (causing death or injury while driving in violation of R.S 39:3-40), police said.
