Volunteers Will Rake Leaves For Seniors, Disabled Residents In Nutley
The popular program pairs local volunteers with seniors and residents with disabilities who can't rake their own leaves.

NUTLEY, NJ — Nutley is bringing back a popular program that helps local seniors and disabled residents who can’t rake their leaves.
The town’s Random Acts of Kindness Extended to Seniors (RAKES) program pairs local volunteers with senior and disabled residents. The program offers free leaf-raking assistance to residents 60 and older, or residents with disabilities who can’t afford paid help.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 29.

According to the township, businesses, churches, civic groups, schools and neighborhood organizations are encouraged to form volunteer teams to rake homes during the holiday weekend. The program can also be used by high school students to fulfill their community service commitment for college entry.
Residents who qualify for raking assistance should contact Cheryl Gaccione at cgaccione@nutleynj.org or 973-284-4958. Groups interested in forming a volunteer team can reach out to the Department of Public Works at the same number.

Applications are due by Friday, Nov. 14.
The RAKES program was first inspired by Student Government Day, when a student suggested a community leaf-raking initiative. Since then, it has grown into an annual tradition, with contributions from local scouting troops, athletic teams and many other community groups.
Last year, the program assisted more than 75 seniors in Nutley, and was powered by more than 100 volunteers. Some participants have been paired with the same households for years, becoming almost like “extended family,” town officials said.
This year will mark the 17th season of the initiative.
“The RAKES Program is a point of pride for our township,” Mayor Joseph Scarpelli said.
“[The program] reflects Nutley’s commitment to supporting our senior and disabled neighbors, ensuring they receive the help they need every fall,” Scarpelli said.
