Whiz Kid of the Week: Jewel Daniels

Juniata College sophomore wins first place in oratorical contest

  • Belleville Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Jewel Daniels
  • Name: Jewel Daniels
  • School: Sophomore at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa.
  • Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Daniels, from Bloomfield, won the first place award last week in the Juniata College Bailey Oratorical Contest with her choice for person of the year in 2010. Instead of choosing a person, Daniels argued global communication was 2010's "idea of the year."

"Global Communication allows us to have compassionate connections with the world," she told judges during the March 1 contest. "Global Communication empowers us to share our sense of generosity, humanity and solidarity, which becomes more and more important for everyone as the world becomes more connected."

Daniels used the harrowing experiences of the Haiti earthquake, the Tunisian merchant's protest and the trapped Chilean miners as examples of where global communication raised worldwide awareness.

"Without the magnitude of the perpetual contact we have across the globe, these events would have played out much differently," Daniels said.

Daniels, who is studying communications at Juniata College, received $1,000 for winning first place in the oratorical contest.
