'Selflessly Served': Retired Berkeley Police Officer Mourned
Berkeley is mourning the loss of retired patrolman George Waugh Jr., who died on Thursday at the age of 61.

BERKELEY, NJ — Berkeley is mourning the loss of former patrolman George Waugh Jr., who died on Thursday at the age of 61.
“Ptl. Waugh faithfully and selflessly served our department and the residents of Berkeley Township until his retirement in 2008,” Mayor Carmen Amato said in a statement. “Ptl. Waugh was known for his personable demeanor and his dedication to our residents, many of whom still ask about him in the years since his retirement.”
Waugh was a police officer for the Berkeley Township Police Department for many years before retiring, according to his obituary.
Waugh served as an original member of the department's K-9 unit and later as a traffic safety officer.
“Ptl. Waugh was a great person and a great officer and will be dearly missed. Please keep his family in your prayers,” Amato said.
Waugh was an avid boater, enjoyed working part-time at Wawa during his retirement and especially cherished the time spent with his family and grandchildren, his obituary says.
He is predeceased by his father George A. Waugh and by his brother-in-law Brian Flory. Surviving is his loving wife MaryBeth Waugh; his 4 children Kandece Henning and her husband Doug, Kelly Bankes and her husband Drew, Amanda Tormollan and her husband Casey and Patrolman D.J. Williams and his wife Samantha; his nine grandchildren Tre, Cole, Cade, Emersyn, Logan, Wyatt, Landon, Maverick and Owen; his mother Carol Waugh; his in-laws Charles and Arlene Wilson; his stepmother Joanne Waugh; his siblings Lori Flory, Chris Waugh, Alex Waugh, James Waugh, Sharon Brown, Sheila Ruckart and Laura Bogan. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A viewing was held on Monday, May 3 at the Mastapeter Memorial Home in Bayville. A funeral will be held privately with immediate family.
