Cool Off At Ocean County's (Non-Ocean) Hidden Gem Beaches
You don't have to go to the ocean to have a beach day. These beaches are quieter, less crowded and free.

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — Going to the beach in the summer just makes sense. It's slightly cooler than it is inland, and even if it is unbearably hot, a dip in the water will fix that right away.
But the Jersey Shore is, famously, incredible crowded during the summer months. Oceanfront beaches are packed with bennies and sometimes, you just don't want to deal with those crowds. Or maybe, you have small children and are worried about the big ocean waves.
If you're looking for something a little more lowkey, check out a non-ocean beach. Ocean County also has bay beaches, plus lakes and creeks that are great for cooling down. Plus, they're often quieter and best of all, free.

Lake Horicon Park, Lakehurst
This stream-fed lake is loved by families who can often be seen relaxing on the sand on a hot day. It's guarded during the summer and the park has a playground and grills, so you can make a full day of it. Kayaking and fishing are also common activities. Note that the lake has cedar water, so light-colored swimsuits may get stained.
Dudley Park (Cedar Creek)
Route 9 at Sycamore Street, Bayville
Lifeguards are on duty at this creek, which makes it a great spot for kids. It's quiet and shaded, with a playground, picnic table, grills and trails. Bring your canoe, too. This is another cedar water area, so again, be careful.
A. Paul King County Park (Manahawkin Lake)
2 W. Bay Ave., Manahawkin
In the center of Stafford lies Manahawkin Lake, where you can go swimming when lifeguards are on duty. You can also go on a picnic, enjoy the playground, play horseshoes or basketball and go kayaking.
Barnegat Bathing Beach
Bayshore Drive and Barnegat Bay, Barnegat
This small beach is another great spot for kids, so you don't have to go all the way to LBI. The water is shallow and it's a bay beach, so no massive waves. Just bring lots of bug spray as greenheads are a frequent visitor.
Jennifer Lane Beach
1198 Jennifer Ln., Beach Haven West
Lifeguards are on duty every day at this small bay beach. It's a great quiet spot to relax in the sand, and kids will love to climb on Jenny the whale, a statue sticking out of the sand.
