The project's attorney asked the zoning board for the hearing, initially set for Wednesday, to be postponed.

BERKELEY, NJ — The hearing on a controversial rehab/detox facility in Berkeley will be postponed after developers asked the zoning board for an adjournment Wednesday.

Gregory Hock, the attorney representing the developers, asked that the hearing be postponed to "make some changes."

"Our professionals have given us a little more guidance," Hock said. Instead of making changes at the meeting, developers wanted to have time to change their plans and have them reviewed by the township's professionals.

The hearing will be carried without notice, meaning that developers will not have to publish the notice in the newspaper or mail it to neighbors.

It will now be heard at the Feb. 11, 2026 meeting.

That disappointed the room packed with residents who were eager to share their thoughts on the project.

Developers are seeking to build the three-story center on Tallwood Way, according to public notice. They need several variances as the property lies within the business zone, where these types are facilities are not permitted under Berkeley's zoning laws.

The developers of this property are the same as those behind the controversial 24-unit apartment complex also on Tallwood Way. When that proposal was initially approved, it split the property and created two new lots; the eastern lot will house the apartments, while the western lot is set for this rehab facility.

The building will house 82 rooms and 164 beds, according to public notice. A helicopter pad is also proposed.
