BERKELEY, NJ — As the community still mourns the loss of local icon Bob Popovics, his memory will not be forgotten.

Berkeley Township officials voted to make June 1 "Bob Popovics Day" this past December, and hope to see it be so throughout the entire state as well. That day was chosen as June is when the rose garden at Shady Rest is in bloom. Shady Rest Restaurant, which Popovics owned for many years, has plans to honor him on that day.

"We would love for you to join us next Sunday and share in the beauty of Bob's beloved rose garden," Shady Rest shared on social media. "Take a stroll through the patio, enjoy some of Bob's favorite music and videos, and enjoy breakfast bites courtesy of Kate & Ally's Catering."

The event runs 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. A photographer will also be on hand for portraits with the roses.

During regular dining hours, Popovics' favorite dishes will be available as specials.

"Come and help our family celebrate Bob's memory on Bob Popovics Day!" Shady Rest said.

Popovics was 75 when he died last year after being struck in a hit-and-run. Other than running Shady Rest for nearly 60 years, Popovics was an iconic part of the fishing community; a well-known saltwater fly fisherman and fly tyer whose "Pop Fleyes" set the standard for saltwater flies.

The woman who struck him, Genell A. McInaw, was recently indicted on multiple charges in the crash.
