Raymond Dorso, World War II Army Veteran, Dies At 96

Longtime Bayville resident helped organize Berkeley baseball leagues and played ball until he was 80.

Raymond Dorso of Bayville died on July 25, 2018 with his loving family at his bedside. He was 96.

Born and raised in Newark, he lived in Bayville for the past 60 years. Mr. Dorso was a former Berkeley Township road department employee. He retired from the township building and grounds department in 1978.

Ray was an active member of the Bayville community. He and several friends organized all of Bayville's softball and baseball leagues. He was an umpire, and played ball till he was 80.

Ray also enjoyed playing Santa for many years and was influential in obtaining many toys to make sure under privileged children had a nice Christmas. Mr. Dorso proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. Finally, big Ray is "Down by the Riverside."

Surviving are his wife of 69 years Geraldine "Gabby" Dorso; four children, Raymond Dorso, Thomas Dorso and his wife AnneMarie, Frances Dorso and Anna Baranyay and husband Matt; eight grandchildren, Raymond and his wife Kathy, Alayna, Nick, Beth, Abby, Matthew, Clark and Julia. Also surviving are seven great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 30 at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville. A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday at the funeral home with a prayer service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Bayville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray's memory to; Popcorn Park Zoo, 1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ 08731 or to (ahscares.org), would be appreciated.
