Earthquake Rattled NJ Friday Morning, USGS Confirms

Did you feel it? The minor quake happened shortly before 8:30 a.m.

GLADSTONE, NJ — An earthquake shook parts of New Jersey on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 1.8-magnitude quake was reported at 8:23 a.m. Friday, USGS data shows. It originated about 7 kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone, at a depth of 8.1 kilometers.

On the USGS website, people in Gladstone, Lake Hopatcong, and New York City have reported feeling a weak shaking. No damage has been reported.

It has been close to a year since a 4.8-magnitude earthquake caught residents in New Jersey by surprise, rattling quite a few other East Coast states as well.

There have been other, smaller quakes since then including one in Bergen County this January.
