Fatal Accident With NJ Police Car And Cyclist Under Investigation
The cyclist struck the driver side of a police car on the way to a routine call, according to the Attorney General's Office.
NEW JERSEY — A fatal crash involving a police car and a cyclist on June 18 in Atlantic City is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office.
The person driving the bicycle was identified as Everett Stern, 63, of Atlantic City.
Stern was driving eastbound on Arctic Avenue when his bicycle struck the driver side of a police car going northbound on Arkansas Avenue on the way to a routine call.

The Atlantic City Police officer driving the car had no lights or siren activated.
The accident happened at around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Arkansas Avenue and Arctic Avenue.

The officer called for medical assistance and immediately began providing aid to Stern, who was later taken by ambulance to the Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, where he died on June 25.
The investigation is being conducted according to a directive implemented by the Attorney General, which states the Attorney General’s Office must conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity.

Known as the “Independent Prosecutor Directive,” it was issued in 2019. Just this week, the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability announced it had established standard operating procedures for Grand Jury presentations of fatal police encounter investigations, in an effort to ensure neutrality.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing and no further information is being released.
