New Jersey American Water to Flush System

It will be done in the Hills starting April 15.

The New Jersey American Water is planning to flush its water distribution system in the Somerset Hills, and throughout the state, to make sure the water is clean.

The system in Bedminster and Bernards Towship will be flushed April 15 through April 21.

The water distribution system is being cleaned through the company's Spring Cleaning programs to help ensure that customers are receiving high quality water. Crews will be flushing out water mains in order to remove any harmless particles in the pipes.

Basically, with the system being flushed the release said, New Jersey American Water will be opening fire hydrants to increase water flows and also flush sediment from the pipes.

During that time, there may be a drop in water pressure, or some discolored water, but this is all normal. If the water is discolored, customers should just let it run until it’s clear.

There are several tips being offered while the pipes are being flushed.

  • While the flushing is being done, avoid running tap water, using the washing machine or using the dishwasher.
  • Check for discolored water before using both the washing machine or dishwasher, and wait until it is clear in the tap before using both. If laundry becomes stained from water, rewash the clothes right away and add a rust remover.
  • The discoloration in the water may last for a few hours in some cases, but it does not affect water quality.
  • If the water pressure or water volume is low, check the faucet screens for any trapped particles.
