Somerset County Government: Somerset County Park Commission Offers Free Christmas Tree Recycling

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ – The Somerset County Park Commission is, once again, hosting a free, live Christmas tree recycling program until the end of January 2022. Mulch and chips produced from the recycled trees are used throughout the park to protect and nurture plant life. Mulch will be available at drop-off sites on a first-come, first-serve basis for residents who are recycling their trees.

“The Park Commission is pleased to bring back this free, eco-friendly and cost-effective program so residents can easily dispose of their Christmas trees,” said Somerset County Park Commission Secretary Director Geoffrey Soriano. “Trees will be chipped and shredded into mulch or woodchips and used for plant life throughout the park system, which will help the environment and help the County’s taxpayers save money.”

 Drop-off Site Locations
Trees can be dropped off seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., until Jan. 31, 2022, at the following two locations:

• Colonial Park Gardens located on 156 Mettlers Road, Parking Lot F, Franklin Township
• North Branch Park located on 355 Milltown Road at the lighted baseball field, Bridgewater

Christmas Tree Recycling Guidelines

• Only one tree per family will be accepted
• Trees must be free of ornaments, wires, netting, and tinsel
• Wreaths and garlands will NOT be accepted
• Group deliveries and trees from dealers will NOT be accepted

Hearing and speech-impaired individuals can call the Relay Service at 711 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday (except holidays).

The Somerset County Park Commission stewards nearly 15,000 acres of county-owned open space, which is visited by 2 million park users each year. Five golf courses have three driving ranges, a pitch and putt course and a recreational putting course. Other attractions include a riding stable, an environmental education center, two tennis facilities, an outdoor pool, paddle boating, a rock and rare plant garden, an award-winning rose garden, arboretum, and a sensory and fragrance garden. Six county parks also offer amenities, such as athletic fields, picnic facilities, bike paths, fishing, birdwatching, cross country skiing, and hiking.
