Belleville Pharmacist Accused of Filling Fraudulent Oxycodone Prescriptions

More than a dozen involved in obtaining and selling drugs, U.S. Attorney says.

A Belleville pharmacist allegedly filled prescriptions for oxycodone and other drugs knowing they were fraudulent to members of a distribution ring, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced Wednesday.

Vincent Cozzarelli, 77, of Belleville, a pharmacist and owner of Rossmore Pharmacy in Belleville, along with 14 New Jersey residents and a resident of Brooklyn, have been charged with conspiring to possess and distribute oxycodone after an investigation involving confidential sources, physical surveillance, and recorded text messages and phone calls.

Federal agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration Tactical Diversion Squad arrested 12 of the defendants Wednesday and two on Tuesday, while two others remain at large.

Victoria Horvath, 42, of Elizabeth, who goes by the alias “Gypsy”, was identified in the complaint as a senior member of the organization, which obtained prescriptions from various doctors, filled them at pharmacies in Belleville and elsewhere and then sold the drugs for a profit.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Cozzarelli and the other defendants in custody were scheduled to make their initial appearance Wednesday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Falk in Newark federal court.
