Bloomfield Firefighters Battle Deck Blaze

Despite reports of 20-foot flames and heavy smoke, firefighters made quick work of backyard fire.

Bloomfield firefighters and other emergency responders were able to contain a blazing fire on a backyard deck early tuesday night.

The fire broke out at 144 Willard Ave. shortly after 6 p.m. Homeowner Audrey Rowe and other members of her family had only just returned home from work when her 22-year-old neice Roshawna noticed the blaze.

"My neice came downstairs and said the porch was on fire," Rowe said. The five family members stepped out of the house and Rowe called 911.

Bloomfield Police were first to arrive on the scene. They stationed a cruiser at the intersection of Willard and Bloomfield Ave. to block traffic as two Bloomfield fire trucks extended hoses to battle the fire.

While the flames engulfing the deck was large enough that plumes of smoke were reportedly visible on Franklin Ave., a Fire Department Captain at the site said they were able to extinguish the fire within 90 seconds.

The fire left the deck and nearby aboveground pool with a charred appearance. Radiant heat from the fire caused minimal damage to cars parked near the deck in the driveway but the fire did not spread to the house and no one was hurt.

The fire is still under investigation at this time.
