Help Pick Up Brick Beach During Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps

Help get the beaches ready for summer by taking part of the annual spring trash removal headed up by Clean Ocean Action.

BRICK, NJ — Brick Township's Environmental Commission and the Pick Up Brick program will be participating in the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps on Saturday, and officials are welcoming volunteers to help.

The cleanups will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and volunteers will be picking up trash and more at three beaches in the township: Brick Beach 1, Brick Beach 2, Brick Beach 3 and Windward Beach Park.

Brick Beach 1, 2 and 3 are ocean beaches on Route 35; Windward Beach is on Princeton Avenue.

Clean Ocean Action has been organizing the beach sweeps for nearly 40 years, one of the longest running cleanups in the world. The cleanup first started in 1985 at Sandy Hook with 75 volunteers. The volunteers were given different color T-shirts. Each color designated a different type of item the volunteer was to collect. The T-shirts represented the major categories that items are made of: plastic, glass, metal, wood and foam plastic.

Volunteers should bring gloves and a trash bucket (this helps to reduce the number of plastic bags used). Also wear sunscreen and hard-soled shoes and dress for the weather. Stay off dunes and respect wildlife.
