MANTOLOKING – A New Jersey beach has sent its lifeguards home because of the coronavirus.

Mantoloking has announced that the last day for lifeguards was Thursday because of a positive COVID-19 test involving the staff at the Lyman Street beach.

The staff member was on the stand two weeks ago, on Aug. 22 and 23. If you have questions or believe you may have been exposed, please reach out to the Ocean County Health Department at 732-341-9700 ext. 7411 or through email covid@ochd.org.

"We had nine lifeguards left and seven had to go into quarantine," Mayor E. Laurence White said told The Asbury Park Press. "So far, thankfully, we have had no other cases."

White told the Press the borough made it through a busier-than-normal summer with no safety issues until the positive case, and the lifeguard who tested positive does not live in town.

The beach will still have badge checkers, social distancers and cleaning staff out on the beach through Labor Day.

"Swim at your own risk!" the town said.

Day badges can be purchased for $10 dollars at the Shed on Downer, between the Firehouse and Municipal Building.

Credit card and check are only allowed. No cash.
