We all know students who excel in academics, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Brick.

BRICK, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Sarah Jacob, who nominated her sister, Mary Ann, from Brick.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Mary Ann is a star student by every definition of the word. As a senior at Brick Memorial High School, she has excelled academically, in her extracurricular activities, and through service. Beyond that, I am most proud of the amazing and kind person she has become. I know no one more deserving of this praise than my sister.

Mary Ann’s benevolent character and creativity carries over into every aspect of the hardworking person she is. An academic Honor Roll student, Student of the Month, and member of the National Honor Society, Mary Ann works extremely hard on her studies. She dedicates herself to her coursework with the goal of college in mind, as she will be the second person in my family to attend college, following myself. She has faced a lot of challenges as a first-generation student, and I am so beyond proud of her academic accomplishments. With every college acceptance I cannot get happier that her hard work is being recognized.

Her hardworking attitude is also apparent in her work experience. She has spent her summers working, either as a babysitter to multiple families or at the Evergreen Woods Park Association as a pool guard. She has saved her money, and I only see her spend it when it has to do with gifts for her friends and family. Her generosity has always been a part of her character, and just another reason on top of many of why she is a star.

Mary Ann is service-oriented, constantly volunteering at community events, such as Fall Fest and Trunk-or-Treats. She does so through the Brick Memorial Art and Mural Club, which she is the president of. She will commit countless hours to face painting for children or beautifying the high school with murals, creating happiness all around. As the president of the Art and Mural Club, she leads her members, spearheads events, and is a role model for other students. She is also involved with more extracurriculars at school. Outside of these clubs, Mary Ann has independently taught herself graphic design and digital art. She is so immensely talented, creating beautifully designed pieces of her friends, singers, and characters. She works so hard to improve her skills, as she will be going to college for Graphic and Digital Design, and I could not be prouder of her pursuing her passions.

Mary Ann is the kindest, most creative and dedicated person I know, and I am beyond blessed to have her as my sister.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

There are so many amazing qualities that Mary Ann has. She has faced so many challenges and yet has persevered through them all. But what I want everyone to know about my star student is that she has a big heart. Her love and care for others is so grand. She will pour her time, energy, and heart into her friends and family, even if we’re not deserving of her endless generosity and kindness. She sees the good in everyone. She would never ask you for the moon even though she deserves it. Beyond being a star student, President, National Honor Society member, and all the accolades you can name, Mary Ann is the kindest person I know. She is a genuinely good person, and I am so lucky to have her in my life.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Mary Ann!
