Summer and early fall in New Jersey is a great time to enjoy the days outdoors. Want to make your landscape more appealing for that extra yard time? You can knock out a few projects on your own.

Any landscaping project is going to take a good deal of sweat equity. Up for the work? Here are some things you can DIY with a little elbow grease and some research.

  • Sodding: If you don’t have grass in your yard, most homeowners can handle some sodding. Stretch out your upper and lower body first, because you may be sore tomorrow from hunching over. Once you’ve rolled out the sod, research how much water and further maintenance is needed. You might consider asking a neighbor who has a good-looking yard for their tips.
  • Planting Trees: First things first, research the best time of year to plant a particular tree as well as how much water it needs in the first week, if you should use ropes or wire to stand it up, etc. Then, get digging.
  • Planting Flowers, Shrubs and Plants: Digging holes for ornamental shrubs or trees is tough, time-consuming work, but you can feasibly execute it on your own. Ask at your local nursery what soil combinations will work best with particular plants.

When To Hire A Pro

Digging in the dirt is grueling but relatively straightforward. If your project involves laying brick patios, building brick ponds or installing a fountain, it’s best to hire help. These projects require not only time and energy, but also knowledge and experience. Many of these installations also need to adhere to certain local coding laws.

When it comes to smaller jobs, you can always redig and start from scratch. For larger projects, leave the work to the pros. If you are interested becoming a more-skilled DIYer, ask them if you can look on. Then, you can see what goes into building a koi pond or brick paver patio.
