Tents, Canopies Banned From Brick Beaches For 2024

Beach erosion has shrunken the space available for beachgoers, officials said.

People coming to Brick Beach 3 (and Brick Township's other beaches) will not be permitted to use large tents or canopies on the beach for the summer of 2024.

BRICK, NJ — Brick Township beachgoers will not be permitted to use large tents or canopies on the township's beaches this summer under a resolution passed recently by the Brick Township Council.

That's because beach erosion caused during winter storms has reduced the amount of space on the beach, officials said.

Large tents and canopies have grown in popularity with beachgoers in recent years, marking out space and providing some shade for those who want a break from the direct sunlight.

The only exception is for tents and canopies that are designed to provide shade for infants and small children. These tents can be no larger than 40 inches high by 40 inches wide.

"We want to make going to our beautiful beaches a pleasant and safe experience for as many people as possible," Mayor Lisa Crate said. "Restricting tents and canopies will safeguard our beachgoers from potential hazards associated with overcrowding."

People are still welcome to bring beach umbrellas to provide shade, Crate said.

A beach nourishment project by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the works. Bids solicited in 2023 were rejected because they were too high and officials were working to seek new bids for the work for the Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet project, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.
