Irene Downgraded to Tropical Storm

Center of storm began passing over NYC at 9 a.m.

The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Irene to a tropical storm as the center moves over New York City.

The NHC’s updated statement, issued at 9 a.m., said an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft and National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated the center of Irene moved over NYC at 9 a.m. and has weakened to a tropical storm. The statement said the estimated intensity of winds at landfall was 65 mph.
