1 Dead, 1 Hurt In Fairfield After Shooting At Hotel: Police (UPDATED)

A double shooting took place at a hotel in Fairfield on Friday. A police investigation continues.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A double shooting took place at the Ramada by Wyndham on Two Bridges Road in Fairfield on Friday. One person is dead and another was wounded, authorities said.

The Fairfield Police Department issued the following statement on Friday at 1 p.m.:

“There is heavy police activity in the east end of town near the Jose Tejas/Ramada Inn area. Please stay clear of the area and we ask you do not call police headquarters asking for information. All accurate information will be provided here and by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office as soon as possible.”

Authorities gave an update at 2:15 p.m., noting that there was no active shooter in Fairfield or the surrounding area.

Police offered another statement at 4:15 p.m., saying that there is no threat to the community:

"It is confirmed that a shooting occurred today at the Ramada by Wyndham on Two Bridges Road. Two people were shot, with one confirmed deceased at the scene. The second victim is currently at a local hospital in surgery. Additional information will be put out on a suspect once it becomes available. Again, there is no threat to the community."

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office gave some additional details about the shooting on Friday evening.

According to prosecutors, the Fairfield Police Department got a 9-1-1 call at 12:27 p.m. about “trouble” at the hotel. Officers found two males at the scene, both suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the victims was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m.

The other victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and is being treated for his wounds, authorities said.

On Saturday, prosecutors identified the deceased victim as Mohammad Sahariar, 28, of Fairfield. The other victim remains hospitalized, authorities said.
