WEST CALDWELL, NJ — West Caldwell police arrested three people in connection with a motor vehicle burglary and an attempted home burglary, authorities announced this week.

According to the West Caldwell Police Department, Darius Caldwell, 29, of Jersey City, and Jayshyn Abel, 23, of Newark, were charged with conspiracy to commit burglary. In addition, a 17-year-old juvenile from Newark was charged with burglary into a motor vehicle and attempted burglary into a residence.

“On March 17, patrol officers responded to a report from a resident on Ellis Road who noticed an unknown individual inside his parked vehicle in his driveway. The homeowner reported that he heard his garage door opening and, upon looking outside, saw the suspect exiting the driver’s side of the vehicle and heading towards the open garage door. It was later determined that the suspect used a garage door opener from the vehicle to attempt entry into the residence.”

After a “diligent investigation,” police determined that Caldwell and Abel traveled to Albany, New York to rent a vehicle, which they then used to commit multiple burglaries and attempted auto thefts.

“We urge all residents to remain vigilant and ensure that their vehicles and homes are securely locked at all times,” police advised.
